Jumpsuits are worn by workers and prisoners as they are easy to manufacture and cheap. They are mass-produced as a type of uniform to keep people looking the same and to create a working atmosphere. A jumpsuit is an all-in-one outfit with a pants and top in one garment. It can be belted or have a plain midsection. Jumpsuits to work in are called overalls and baby jumpsuits are babygros. Nobody really jumps in these clothes. They were named after parachuters and extreme sportspeople who jump out of planes, but that type of action is rare compared to the amount of people who wear jumpsuits to relax.
Original skydivers’ jumpsuits were single piece garments that would be designed to combat the cold and insulate the body from the temperature extremes. Flight suits are worn by pilots, ski suits are worn on the slopes and car racers have an auto race suit. These jumpsuits are functional and have been designed for a specific purpose.
Women jumpsuits are worn by fashion models and the designs are very different. Some jumpsuits are formal and sexy with detail on the back or thin straps, while some are strapless and held up with elastic above the chest or it is fitted and zipped up the back. Stitching, diamante and colourful patterns can change the look of a jumpsuit. Shorter jumpsuits are trendy, but make sure that you have great legs to be able to wear the denim jumpsuits without looking like a construction worker. Female jumpsuits have been created to be sexier than men’s jumpsuits to show that women can look good at all times. The unbroken line from the neck to the feet is designed to be flattering on some body shapes.
Men’s denim jumpsuits are less revealing for obvious reasons and they are generally long sleeved practical clothing items, where women use jumpsuits as a fashion statement. Fashion websites tend to group men’s jumpsuits with dungarees and overalls. In my understanding, overalls are work items that prevent clothes getting dirty and the body getting damaged. Overalls are worn by painters, metal workers and construction workers. Military personal also wear overalls as they are practical items of clothing that protect against the elements. Dungarees are long pants attached to a bib that is fastened with straps that attach over the shoulder. These dungarees are worn by farmers, generally with a shirt underneath.
From being practical manual labour work wear, dungarees, overalls and jumpsuits are a hot fashion item worn by men and women. The can be dressed up with accessories and will always be comfortable and warm. They can either flatter the figure (by rolling up the sleeves) or hide bulges, but going to the loo is always an issue as it requires removing most of the jumpsuit. Some jumpsuits have a jump seat that can be removed when using the bathroom. Because jumpsuits are popular in science fiction movies, they have connotations of futurism which means that there are more types of jumpsuits to come.
